The Boulder Police Department has announced that Scott Sloan, a 12-year veteran of the department, is its new detective who will work in the computer crimes forensics laboratory.

Dedicating a lab and detective to that field have been long-term goals for the police department, which has seen an increase in computer-related crimes.

Sloan began the position on Dec. 28 and is in the process of completing the 320 hours of training that will make him a certified forensic examiner by May 2011. Sloan will be assigned cases involving online sexual predators and perpetrators of computer fraud and identify theft.

The creation of the lab, including the purchase of all related technology and the planned initial training, will cost the police department about $38,000.
