Boulder to go dark for Earth Hour

The City of Boulder announced that they would be joining more than 4,100 cities in Earth Hour 2010 on Saturday, March 27 at 8:30 p.m. The global climate event, led by the World Wildlife Fund, asks participants to turn off their lights for one hour to send the message of their concern toward climate change, dirty air and dependency on foreign oil.

“Non-essential lights in all City of Boulder-owned buildings and facilities will be turned off during Earth Hour,” a City of Boulder press release said. “Public schools, commercial and residential buildings, and local businesses will be encouraged to ‘flip the switch’ as well.

“The City of Boulder estimated that if all Boulder households and businesses went dark for one hour, carbon dioxide emissions would be reduced by 18 metric tons. This is equivalent to the average Boulder household’s entire carbon footprint for a year.  To extend the impact of this event, community members are also asked to replace at least three old light bulbs with compact fluorescent light (CFL) bulbs, and/or pledge to take one action this year to reduce their carbon footprint.”

There will be an Earth Hour event at The St. Julien Hotel and Spa (900 Walnut St.) from 5:30 p.m. to 11 p.m., where guests will have a celebratory toast and a lights-out ceremony at 8:30. The Center for ReSource Conservation will also host an event at their Resource Yard (6400 Arapahoe Rd.) from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. that will feature live music, free workshops, local artists, and a non-profit fair.
