Breckenridge expansion gets Forest Service approval

Vail Resorts, owner of four Colorado ski destinations, has reached an agreement with the White River National Forest on a plan to add 550 new acres of skiing to Breckenridge Resort.

The new area on Peak 6 along the west border of the ski resort will not be open in the 2012-2013 season, but should be ready for the following year, Vail Resorts said.

The decision by the U.S. Forest Service comes after a long debate about the impact of the expansion on the threatened Canada lynx, which resides in the White River Forest. Among other things, Vail Resorts agreed to start a fund for the cat and other threatened species and close the area for migrations.
