FBI serves search warrants on 3 Toyota suppliers

DETROITThe Federal Bureau of Investigation confirmed Wednesday that it has served search warrants on three Toyota suppliers, but declined to say why.

FBI spokeswoman Sandra Berchtold said in an e-mail that search warrants were served Tuesday against Yazaki North America in Canton, Mich.; Denso International in Southfield, Mich.; and Tokai Rika in Plymouth, Mich.

Julie Kerr, spokeswoman for Denso International America Inc., said the company’s Southfield office was inspected Tuesday night over alleged antitrust issues.

“That’s all we know, is that the investigation is in regard to anti-trust issues,” Kerr said. “We are cooperating.”

Denso, a major Toyota supplier, also is part-owned by Toyota.

Kerr said the investigation is unrelated to Toyota’s recalls.

Yazaki, with its North American headquarters in Canton, makes automotive electronics and Japan-based Tokai Rika Group makes gear shifters, the push button on push-button starts, steering columns and seat belts.
