The Boulder Creek Festival and the Bolder Boulder headline
the events kicking off summer this Memorial Day weekend in the Boulder area.

The Creek Fest is held Saturday, Sunday and Monday along
Boulder Creek between 9th and 14th streets. In addition to events, activities,
food and entertainment for adults and kids alike, there are a variety of
special features associated with this year’s festival.

The Creek Fest kicks off early with a Friday night concert
starring That Eighties Band from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Twenty Ninth Street mall.
The event will feature entertainment, food, Boulder Beer and margaritas.

A fishing derby will be held for ages 12 and younger from 7
to 10 a.m. on Saturday at the fishing pond at 6th and Canyon, hosted by the
Boulder Fish & Game Club. A tribute to veterans and those currently serving
in the military will be held on Sunday from 10 to 11:30 a.m. at the Bandshell,
featuring a concert by the Boulder Concert Band.

The Vintage Bicycle Swap, featuring hundreds of bikes for
sale and trade, will be held from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Sunday and Monday at 13th
and Arapahoe. And the second annual Pick Chow! Across America Cook-Off,
sponsored by ZisBoomBah, will feature local chefs Hosea Rosenberg and Eric
Skokan, along with two child sous chefs, competing to create healthy and
delicious kid-friendly dishes at 1 p.m. Monday at the Kids’ Stage.

Last but certainly not least, the annual Duck Race will be
held at 4 p.m. Monday on Boulder Creek, benefiting the Boulder Parks and
Recreation EXPAND Program.

Also on Memorial Day is the city’s most famous race, the
Bolder Boulder.

This year, the 10K walk/run has a new start line, at 30th
and Walnut streets, but it will conclude, as usual, at Folsom Field. Waves of
participants, divided up into six sections, are released every minute or two
between 7 and 9:30 a.m. to accommodate the more than 50,000 people who participate.

Also new this year are sustainability and environmental improvements, from additional recycling bins to minimizing lunch pack waste and packaging. Leftover food items will be donated, compost bins will be added, and vendors and sponsors are being encouraged to make more sustainable choices.

In addition, race organizers are attempting to significantly reduce the number of water cups handed out at aid stations, and to compost the cups that are used. Organizers are encouraging racers to take advantage of on-course, self-serve hydration stations by bringing their own water containers, including a new lightweight, reusable “hydrapouch” that is well-suited for runners.

You can still register until the end of the day Friday at
the race’s retail store at the Twenty Ninth Street mall.
