Shutdown deal at hand: Senate ready; House unsure

National media outlets are reporting that leaders of both parties in the U.S. Senate have reached a deal to end the federal government shutdown, raise the debt limit and restore funding to government programs. A deal should be announced shortly in the Senate.

However, the shutdown began when the House of Representatives, controlled by Republicans, refused to pass a budget bill that didn't include defunding the Affordable Care Act, and it is unclear how Republicans in the House would respond to the deal.

Tomorrow, Oct. 17, is the deadline to raise the debt limit. If the debt limit is not raised by tomorrow, the federal government will no longer be able to borrow money, and would risk default.

See the story at CNN and see updates on the shutdown deal here.
