British ultrarunner postpones Arctic trip due to warm conditions

Ultrarunner Tim Williamson has decided to postpone a solo run to the North Pole after he was warned that unusually warm temperatures have made ice unstable.

Williamson was planning to depart soon for a 2,200-mile unsupported walk to the top of the world, but was warned by an independent geographical society that the Arctic was unsafe to cross.

Record high temperatures and record ice melt meant the ice covering the Arctic would be more likely to give way.

Williamson intends to train in Iceland for the next few months and see if conditions improve.
