LaHood: Transportation faces huge sequester cuts if GOP doesn’t act

The FAA faces $600 million in budget cuts of a debt ceiling agreement isn’t reached and the budget enters sequestration, Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood says. And Republican members of Congress are to blame if it happens.

LaHood, a former Republican Congressman serving in President Barack Obama’s cabinet, says his department will suffer a $1 billion cut, including $600 million to the Federal Aviation Administration.

And Republicans need to “wake up,” LaHood says, to the massive impacts the cuts would have. About 47,000 FAA employees would be furloughed, severely crippling the government’s ability to accommodate flights across the country.
