Australian women convicted of cruelty over the death of a mouse

SYDNEY — An Australian animal welfare group Friday
praised a Queensland court for convicting a 23-year-old woman of animal
cruelty after she posted footage of herself hacking the head off a mouse
on Facebook.

Naomi Anderson pleaded guilty in the Caboolture
Magistrates Court on Friday and received an 18-month good behavior bond
and an order to serve 180 hours of community service.

Royal Societies for the Prevention of Cruelty to
Animals spokesman Michael Beatty told national broadcaster ABC the
sentence was appropriate.

“It was not so much the mouse was killed; it’s that it was killed in a grossly inhumane way,” he said.

Anderson filmed herself using a steak knife to saw
off the mouse’s head. She posted the clip on Facebook under an assumed
name but was reported to the RSPCA by people who recognized her.
