When students and alumni of the University of Colorado think of the athletic department on campus, their minds often turn to the Division I football and basketball teams and their various accomplishments over the years. But there exists a much larger group of student athletes with their own set of accomplishments that are frequently overlooked: the 1,400 students who play club sports.

Soon to be situated among the various granola and protein-rich bars already on the shelves at the Boulder Whole Foods locations will be a new bar with a mission: To help end the malnutrition of thousands of children in Africa. The newest addition is from Two Degrees, a company based out of San Francisco that launched in January and has promised a one-for-one business philosophy with its sales.

Even surrounded by all the activity inside the CW2 studio early on a Monday morning, Dessert Diva Danette Randall finds peace doing what she loves: baking. With the morning news segment taping live, Randall works in a darkened corner of the studio on a rolling kitchen preparation table separating her ingredients for her 8:35 a.m. segment. After a five-minute warning, her table is rolled to her segment space and she checks her lipstick one last time.

Swiatek’s experience is a common one for many youth aged 16 to 21 in Boulder County and across the nation: During the past three years, they are increasingly finding that jobs historically available for them, such as hospitality, food services and retail, are being taken by adults. Some are even calling this summer the most difficult yet in terms of youth employment opportunities. They are gradually becoming the last hired and first fired in these areas as adults scramble to find employment in the wake of the recession.

Pearl Street’s restaurant scene is well-known for its farm-to-table mentality, which centers on produce brought to restaurants from nearby farms to ensure freshness, while supporting the local farming community. Many independently owned restaurants around the Boulder area — including Black Cat, SALT and The Kitchen — share this philosophy and pride themselves on not being involved with large distributing companies.

In response to the increasingly dry summer conditions and recent wildfires in the area, Boulder County Sheriff Joe Pelle has announced he will put a fire ban in place for selected parts of the county.

Firefighters have made progress containing the Maxwell Fire this week, and they now have the blaze 80 percent contained.

Herz says the future may look bright for small breweries in the U.S., but their respective regional markets will determine their success. In Boulder's case, the market is thriving, and some breweries are experiencing the fastest periods of growth they have seen to date.

Jason and Chelsey Magness had only been married five days before they decided to stick together — literally — for 24 hours. The newlyweds attended the Hanuman Festival, a four-day, community oriented yoga and music festival in Boulder, where they took the vow to be in constant physical contact with each other for 24 hours.

LUSH Cosmetics is encouraging the public to head to stores this Saturday and pucker up for a cause. LUSH will be partnering with Freedom to Marry, an organization dedicated to marriage equality, to host a “Kiss and Tell” protest at the chain’s various locations across the country this Saturday, June 18.
