Arrests in scrap metal thefts
Boulder County Sheriff ’s deputies arrested two men on Sept. 23 in connection with thefts of scrap metal from homes that were destroyed in the Fourmile Canyon fire.
Deputies responded at around 9 a.m. to the 5400 block of Sunshine Canyon after callers reported seeing two men loading scrap metal from destroyed homes into the back of their pickup truck. The truck was intercepted about one and a half miles up Sunshine Canyon and was stopped at Sunshine Canyon Drive, near Mount Sanitas.
The suspects, Cesar Antonio Ayala, also know as Cesar Ayala- Morales, 20, of Longmont, and Jorge Salgado, 35, of Lafayette, are expected to be charged with trespassing and felony theft.
The sheriff ’s office has received several other reports of people taking scrap metal from the burn areas.
Even though the homes are destroyed, they are still private property, and anything located on the property still belongs to the owner.
Neighborhood watch
Boulder police were called to the 5800 block of Pennsylvania Avenue Sept. 26 after someone reported that it appeared that a neighbor had been in an accident.
The caller said that his neighbor came home with heavy damage to the front of his car and had both front airbags deployed. The driver had run into a steel-filled pipe on 55th and Pennsylvania Avenue before driving home. The 39-year old male was uninjured but was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence, careless driving and operating an uninsured vehicle.
Copying the cops
On Oct. 3 officers responded to the 3700 block of Wonderland Hill when someone reported that a man was impersonating a police officer.
The caller and her son were riding their bicycles when they were stopped by the suspect, who told them that it was against the law to ride without lights. When the victim asked for identification, the suspect refused, saying that he didn’t have to show it to her. The 53-year-old suspect was arrested on suspicion of impersonating a peace officer and driving under the influence.
Unattended death investigated
On Sept. 27, at around 4:45 p.m., Boulder County dispatch was notified of a deceased person in the 4700 block of White Rock Circle.
A roommate came home and found a 65-year-old who appeared to have committed suicide. The Boulder Rural Fire Department, Boulder County Sheriff ’s Office, detectives and the coroner’s office arrived on scene to investigate further. Officials do not suspect foul play but are continuing their investigation. Two climbing rescues Two separate rescues were performed in Boulder County on Sept. 25.
The first was a 27-year-old woman who was injured while climbing in Eldorado Canyon State Park. Rocky Mountain Rescue Group and Eldorado Canyon State Park rangers were able to assist the woman and her climbing partner to the ground and provide medical assistance.
The second rescue occurred in Boulder Canyon when a 31-year-old man climbing in the Boulderado area fell 20 feet to a ledge below. Rocky Mountain Rescue Group and Nederland Fire Protection District were able to reach the climber.
Both climbers suffered numerous injuries and were evacuated to receive medicalcare.
Hot air balloon crash?
On Sept. 24 Boulder County Sheriff ’s deputies, Colorado State Patrol and Boulder Rural Fire responded to a report of a hot air balloon making an emergency crash landing in a parking lot.
At 9 a.m. reports came in of hot air balloon landing in a parking lot in the area of Habitat Drive and White Rock Circle. Residents of the nearby apartments had made the 911 calls.
However, the pilot of the hot air balloon told officials that the balloon, owned by Sunny Day Come Fly Away Hot Air Balloon Company, did not crash, but had to land after it could not gain enough altitude due to a lack of wind. None of the nine people on board the balloon were injured and no property was reported damaged in the landing.
