KGNU, BBC host climate panel
KGNU Independent Community Radio and the British Broadcasting Service (BBC) will present a panel discussion on climate change on June 24 at Unity of Boulder. Jon Stewart, host of BBC’s Science in Action, which airs as part of KGNU’s Science Program, will moderate a panel of researchers from the University of Colorado and the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) who will talk about how the world has dealt with climate change in the wake of last year’s Copenhagen conference.
The panel will feature prominent climate change experts Peter Backlund, Caspar Ammann and Lawrence Buka from NCAR and Roger Pielke Jr. from the University of Colorado. Journalist Leslie Dodson from KGNU’s program How On Earth will join them to discuss the science behind climate change and the importance of conveying its urgency to governments and the public at large. The panel will also take questions from the audience.

Free transit service for concerts
The “HOP 2 Chautauqua” is providing free transit service to the Colorado Music Festival and Chautauqua Summer Music Series concerts from 5:30 p.m. to the end of each show, through the end of the summer season. Buses will arrive every 15 minutes at designated stops from 5:30 to 9 p.m. on Colorado Music Festival concert nights and until 10 p.m. on all other concert nights. At the end of each concert, buses will be parked on the east side of the Chautauqua Auditorium to return passengers to their destinations. Transit stops for this special service are located at 11th and Pearl streets, 13th and Pearl streets, 15th and Pearl streets, Chautauqua Park, the 27th Way Park-n-Ride and along 9th Street between downtown Boulder and Chautauqua.

Bike Shorts Film Festival on a roll
As part of Boulder’s Walk & Bike Month and Walk & Bike to Work Day, the University of Colorado Environmental Center and Community Cycles will host the Fourth Annual Bike Shorts Film Festival and ice cream social at Old Main on the CU campus on Wednesday, June 23. The ice cream social begins at 5:30 p.m. on the south lawn of Old Main, and the film festival begins at 6 p.m. The cost is $6, and proceeds benefit Community Cycles’ Youth Earn-a-Bike Program. SmartCo to hold job fair
SmartCo Foods plans to hire up to 100 full- and part-time employees to staff its new store in Longmont, which is scheduled to open in July. The company is hosting a job fair on Friday, June 18, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Radisson Hotel & Conference Center Longmont-Boulder, located at 1900 Ken Pratt Blvd. in Longmont.
Interested candidates should apply in person, and the company will interview the first 500 people at the job fair. Additional interested candidates will be able to submit applications, but will not be interviewed that day. Positions are available across all levels of expertise, and range from clerks and cashiers to department managers, service managers and store support personnel. Longmont Humane Society opens new store
Longmont Humane Society has opened a third thrift store in Longmont. Second Chance Thrift Store is located at 1610 Pace St., Ste. 100, in the Fox Creek Marketplace. Due to the success of the two previous stores, the new location will have extended hours: 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. from Monday through Saturday and 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday.

Tennis tourney to benefit MHS courts
Monarch High School’s tennis team will host a tennis tournament on July 22-25 to raise funds for tennis court repairs. The tournament will have different divisions for junior and adult players, as well as players of various abilities.
“Our school courts need repair, but budget cuts make it a non-priority issue for the school,” says Greg Buttenmiller, incoming senior varsity player. “By getting this new tournament’s name and info out, we will improve our turnout and hopefully make it a well-known Town of Superior/Louisville tradition.”

County offers farm tours
Boulder County Parks and Open Space, along with Colorado State University Extension, will conduct monthly tours to farms in Boulder County through September, from 5:30-8:30 pm. The tours will introduce Boulder County residents to the spectrum of agricultural production systems, issues, challenges and opportunities on Boulder County open space lands. The tours will highlight different farms each month, representing field and forage crops, vegetable crops and livestock. Farmers will be available to answer questions. Participants are required to register for the tours no later than one week prior to the specified tour date. The next tour is scheduled for July 13 at Red Wagon CSA.

Hike to benefit Uganda nonprofit
On Aug. 28, Educate! will hold its 2nd Annual Hike for Uganda from 8:30 a.m. to 11:30 p.m. at Green Mountain in Boulder. The event will celebrate the connection between Educate!’s U.S. supporters and its Ugandan students, as participants in Boulder and Kamapla, Uganda, trek to the top of a peak, symbolizing the common goal of empowering a generation of socially responsible leaders.
Educate!, founded in 2002, works to support African youth and create a future generation of leaders.
The hike will raise awareness and funds for education programs in Africa, and all of the money raised will directly support Educate!’s 830 Ugandan students as they work to improve their communities.
The event offers two distance options of four miles and two miles and is geared toward various fitness levels. Hikers will also enjoy music by Boulder band Lost Angel Station, and bagels, snacks and other refreshments will be available. Vic’s Espresso will provide coffee and hot chocolate for participants.
Kids can enjoy face painting and music, and the shorter hiking option allows families to participate in the event together.
Registration, breakfast, kids’ activities and live music are scheduled from 8:30 to 9 a.m., and the hike begins at 9:30 a.m. Advance tickets are available for $10, and for $15 after Aug. 25. Kids under 12 are free, and dogs on leashes are also welcome.
The Hike for Uganda is sponsored by Vic’s Espresso, Third Avenue Eye Care, Honest Tea, Sunflower Preschool and Lost Angel Station.
Airport Day open house slated
The Boulder Municipal Airport will host its fifth annual Airport Day and Open House on Saturday, June 19, at the Boulder Municipal Airport, 3327 Airport Rd., from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
The public is invited to see different types of aircraft, tour the facilities and participate in a variety of activities. In addition to showcasing local amenities, the event will have numerous types of aircraft on display, including military and medevac helicopters, sport airplanes, experimental airplanes and WWII and antique aircraft. In addition, Wings Over the Rockies Air & Space Museum will host an activity area where children can build model rockets and balsa wood airplanes, as well as operate a computer flight simulator.
