SUBWAY-STYLE SUSHI

First they came for sub sandwiches. Then they came for burritos. And now, the build-yourown boosters have come for sushi.

Pearl Street standard and weed-pairing visionary Hapa Sushi has announced that in spring it will be opening Motomaki, a build-your-own-sushi-roll restaurant in the Twenty Ninth Street mall.

The 100-seat restaurant will focus on quick-service and customizable rolls.

Motomaki will be located at 1600 28th St., Suite 1216, and plans to open in April.

HOW TO PROPERLY BUTCHER A CARROT

Thinking of going vegetarian but still struggling with how to make steak out of kale? Worry not, eco- and health-conscious citizen. Julia Hellerman, chef at Julia’s Kitchen in North Boulder and faculty member at Bauman College, will be leading a workshop on plant-based cooking this weekend.

Sunday, Jan. 26, swing by Alfalfa’s in downtown Boulder and get the skinny on how to make veggie-based, gluten-free recipes delicious and fun instead of drained of fun and flavor.

The workshop starts at 3 p.m. and is free. Get more information at www.alfalfas.com.

BEER, ‘FOR THE LADIES’

Hey ladies, do you need a better excuse for daydrinking than “what business of it is yours, eh, jerky?” ’Cause if so, you’re in luck. There are two events this week for you.

Barley’s Angels, an international craft beer appreciation club, is opening a new Colorado chapter that’s holding its first meeting this week.

Wednesday, Jan. 29, lushy ladies can meet up at Sanitas Brewing at 7 p.m. and make some new friends interested in craft beer.

What will happen at these meetings?

“Each meeting includes a set of 3–4 beer tasters (4 or 5 oz. each) paired with a food taster to match,” said a press release. “There will also be a presenter and a discussion at each meeting. Over time, if there’s interest, other activities such as beer dinners, brewery tours or outdoor activities like bike rides paired with brewery stops, will be developed.”

The Sanitas meetup will feature a presentation by John Scaggs of Haystack Mountain Goat cheese, who will lead a beer and cheese pairing class with four different Sanitas Beers.

Barley’s Angels currently boasts 62 chapters in six countries. Future meetings will be held on the last Wednesday of each month at a rotating location. Get more info at www.barleysangelscolorado.com.

Similar, but different, is the longer-running Ales4Females series at Left Hand Brewing, which will be going down Monday, Jan. 27.

Left-handed lushy ladies will get to hear from Coey Jenkins and Ashley Luscan, Left Hand Brewing’s quality control lab technicians, aka, the job everyone thinks they want until they have to do it.

“During their presentation these two will tell our guests about their experiences within the craft beer industry, the importance of quality control in a top craft brewery, and lead us through a beer and food pairing with our Left Hand Brewing Beer Week Sauce,” says Left Hand Brewing’s website.

Ales4Females starts at 6:30 p.m. and is free.
