Divestment, recently endorsed by active environmentalists like Bill McKibben, has been one of the most popular eco-friendly ideas of recent times. The term refers to removing investments in fossil fuels, oil exploration and other businesses that take advantage of the environment or create pollution.

It’s a powerful idea, writes Dan Apfel for The Nation, but it’s not enough. Stopping investing is a good first step, but those investments need to go to the right places to continue to make progress.

Apfel says a recent report from the World Economic Forum indicate that renewable energy and other climate solutions need heavy investment. And, he says, investing in green industries should go hand-in-hand with divesting from polluting ones.
