One of the West’s most famous and popular hiking trails could see bicyclists soon, if a new group can convince the U.S. Forest Service.
The Pacific Crest Trail, which runs from Mexico to Canada through California, Oregon and Washington, has been closed to bikes since 1988. The trail stretches 2,663 miles.
Sharing the PCT, the group pushing the USFS to reconsider the decision, says the 1988 closure to bikes came just as mountain bikes were becoming popular. It wasn’t widely understood how to manage biking/hiking paths, but since then, multiuse paths have become common.
