Cloud Atlas, the film adaptation of a David Mitchell novel previously called “impossible” to make into a movie, has stumped one of the best and most outspoken film critics alive.

On his Chicago Sun-Times blog, critic Roger Ebert covers a huge swath of pop culture. But he turned to the blog for a discussion of Cloud Atlas because he wanted comments from his readers on the film, which he calls “a demonstration of the magical, dreamlike qualities of the cinema.”

In a mystified, helpless tone, Ebert describes the film and simultaneously throws up his hands at a film beyond explanation.
