The (ex-)cyclist who wouldn't dope

Grand Junction financial advisor Scott Mercier was surprised to get a call from the U.S. agency that recently won its standoff against one of the best-known athletes in the country.

Mercier had left his cycling career behind him in 1997, after the team doctor for the US Postal Service team called Mercier into his hotel room and handed him vials of clear liquid and a bottle of green pills.

Mercier knew he was out of the sport. He says he couldn't see himself lying about doping, and he realized he couldn't compete without the drugs. That year, he was losing to racers he'd been defeating just a year before.
