For a moment, wind accounts for more than half of Spain’s power

For a brief moment one September night, the wind howled across the plains of Spain, and Spaniards made the most of it.

Spain’s wind farms hit a record 64.2 percent production last month. During the night, wind overtook coal, gas and nuclear as the top producer in Spain.

And while the electricity can’t necessarily all be used at that time, systems are in place to preserve it. The power is used to pump water uphill for storage, so that it can be poured downhill later and used to power mills.

Overall, renewable energy accounts for one-third of Spain’s energy.
