BOULDER’S ORIGINAL CLOSES ABRUPTLY

Longtime breakfast nook The Original Pancake House recently shut its doors after nearly 20 years serving flapjacks for Boulder residents.

The location adjacent to the Boulder Marriott hotel at 2600 Canyon Blvd. is empty and locked, phones have been disconnected, and signage has been obscured by blue tarps. Records indicate that the local franchisee of The Original Pancake House out of Oregon had been dogged recently by unpaid bills.

Court documents filed July 16 in Boulder County District Court show that Tyrus LLC, the company doing business as The Original Pancake House in Boulder, was served with a demand for payment of rent and possession of premises by Virginia Corporation Apple Six Hospitality Ownership, Inc. The plaintiff and property owner alleges that Tyrus LLC racked up unpaid rent and other lease charges totaling more than $30,500, which the owner says justifies the seizure of the premises, according to the filings.

A note from Larry and Shannon Fitzpatrick thanking the Boulder community was posted on the door of the shuttered restaurant. Larry Fitzpatrick is listed as an officer for Tyrus LLC.

Accompanied by an Irish proverb, the note read, “We wish to thank YOU, the Boulder community, for the many years of support you have blessed us with. It is bittersweet that our family restaurant will have the pleasure of your company on this, our last day of service, June 17, 2012.”

The Original Pancake House, Tyrus LLC and Apple Six Hospitality Ownership did not respond to requests for comment.

CYCLE THROUGH SUMMER TASTES

Boulder Wine Merchant is adding two stages of flavor to its pack of tastes in celebration of the dog days of summer, allowing for a retreat from the baking heat or breaking thunderstorm.

In conjunction with that popular bicycle race going on in Europe right now, the Merchant is offering a special Tour de France gift bag that combines two of Boulder’s favorite pastimes. For $59, the package includes two bottles of wine, gift cards to local businesses and a write-up of Tour events by pro cyclist Craig Lewis. Supplies are limited to 10 per week until the race ends on July 22.

On July 24 the Wine Merchant will team up with Peak Spirits distillery in Hotchkiss for a departure from its namesake. Offering a free opportunity to beat the afternoon heat, they will be mixing a variety of gin and tonics made from organic CapRock Gin. The crystal-clear concoctions will be available from 5 to 7 p.m.
