Underwear bomb plot marking bin Laden’s death stopped by CIA

The CIA thwarted a plot by Al Qaeda’s Yemenese affiliate to destroy a U.S.-bound plane using an underwear bomb, according to The Associated Press.

Sources tell the wire agency that the plot involved a more sophisticated version of the underwear bomb which failed to explode on a jetliner over Detroit on Christmas Day, 2009.

The updated version of the bomb did not contain metal, and as such would not have set off airport metal detectors. However, it was not immediately clear whether the body scanners now used in many American airports would have detected it.

The FBI is currently examining the bomb to see if it could have passed through security and taken out a plane.
