Twisted Patrick’s Day

On St. Patrick’s Day, March 17, Boulder’s Twisted Pine Brewing Company will be re-releasing Peppermint Paddy, a chocolate mint stout.

In addition, the brewery will be serving corned beef and hash until 1 p.m., and corned beef and cabbage all night long. The brewery will be open from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m.

In related news, starting Monday, March 14, Twisted Pine will be open for lunch seven days a week. Their hours will be 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Friday, noon to 9 p.m. Saturdays, and noon to 6 p.m. on Sundays.

In addition, every Monday in March $1 of every pint sold will benefit the Kiwanis Club of the Foothills Service Dogs for Kids Project. The money goes to help train service dogs that are donated to children afflicted with debilitating allergies and disabilities.

A new beer, aargh

On March 4, Wynkoop Brewing Company released a new beer, Skull & Crossbones Black Ale.

The beer has been brewed in conjunction with the Denver Museum of Nature & Science’s exhibition “Real Pirates: The Untold Story of the Whydah from Slave Ship to Pirate Ship,” which opened the same day.

Skull & Crossbones is a dark-but-hoppy beer brewed with black patent malt, flaked barley, caramalt and other specialty grains.

The beer is made with dried lemon and lime peel for citrusy notes that complement the beer’s roasted flavors — and combat scurvy for sailing types. An addition of molasses gives the beer extra complexity, and its unique aroma comes from a new hop, El Dorado, used in the beer.

The beer is a limited-release with 6.3 percent alcohol, and it is available on draft only at Wynkoop and a few beer-minded establishments in the Denver area.
