WINTER MARKET

Thanksgiving is in the rearview mirror and the ski areas are open. There’s no point trying to deny it any longer. Winter is nigh. But that’s OK, because with it comes the Boulder County Farmers’ Market’s eighth annual Winter Market, which will go down Saturday, Dec. 6 and Sunday, Dec. 7 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Boulder County Fairgrounds’ Exhibit Hall, 9595 Nelson Road in Longmont.

The two-day event will be chock full of vendors, live music, crafts and all kinds of local food. There will be more than 60 vendors participating, representing farmers, bakers, jewelers, painters, craftspersons, candy-makers and more.

There will also be live demos from vendors such as MM Local Foods, My Mom’s Pie, Silver Canyon Coffee and El Regalo Ranch.

Admission is free. Get more info at www.bcfm.org or call 303-910-2236.

BRU WITHOUT THE BRUTALITY

Even in a food-obsessed town like Boulder, it’s a fact that vegetarians just don’t have as many menu options. Show us a menu with five entrees on it and chances are one of them at most will be free of dead something or other.

But for the next installment of BRU’s monthly beer dinner, vegetarians will get their turn on top. Taking a cue from the vegetarian lifestyle of his neighbors Jake and

Erin Evans (owners of Wild Woods Brewery), founder and chef Ian Clark of BRU is, ahem, “brewing” up an all-veggie menu.

“The evening will also highlight delicious dishes like a beet latke with parsnip sauerkraut paired with BRU’s Gabe & The Giant Peach sour mash golden ale or butternut brown toffee pudding with roasted squash and crème fraîche ice cream and paired with Wild Woods Butternut Brown Ale,” BRU wrote in a press release.

There is also a special Wild Woods/BRU collaborative beer to go with all that vegheaven: Winter Warmer, made with cranberries, mace, clove, bitter orange and honey.

The dinner will go down Monday, Dec. 8 at 7 p.m. It costs $45 per person. The full menu can be seen at www.BruBoulder.com. Call 720-638-5193 for reservations.

ALSO GOOD FOR WINTER: WINE AND BOOKS

OK. You’ve been to the Winter Market.

You’re fully stocked on mittens and scarves. You even have four-wheel drive. You’re ‘effin ready for winter.

So take the next step and engage in that time-honored winter activity: getting schnockered on wine and babbling about books. And don’t just do that to your cat — drink and gab with genuine people.

This week, you can do just that with Boulder Wine Reads, an event being held on Sunday, Dec. 7 at Settembre Cellars Winery and Tasting Room.

“Here’s how it works,” Settembre wrote in a press release. “Our winemaker selects a book, we read a section or two & then gather over a glass to share what we learned. Whether your interest is purely hedonistic, or you wish to explore the intricacy of phenolics, minerality and terroir, we invite you to join an exploration of wine’s story.”

The book for this month’s event is Ancient Wine by Patrick E. McGovern. Don’t have a copy? Don’t worry. It’s chilling in the tasting room for you to read up on at your convenience.
