An Evening with Steven Wright. 8 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 13, Chautauqua Auditorium, 900 Baseline Road, Boulder, 303-440-7666. $32.50-$50.

A lot of comedians start with elements of their basic personality, and then work to amplify them for comic effect. That’s not the case with Steven Wright’s legendarily flat delivery.

“It’s just how I talk,” he says. “Being on stage, it’s a pretty empty place. There’s nothing really for me to get excited about. I’ll be yelling watching a baseball game if someone hits a grand slam, but basically, that’s just how I talk.”

Wright will be showing off that total lack of enthusiasm at Chautauqua Auditorium on Saturday, Sept. 13.

And whether Wright gets excited about delivering his abstract one-liners and off-kilter musings or not, the best sign of the impending funny is that Wright says the reason he has only released two albums and three specials in his 30-year comedy career is that he prefers to focus on his live show. Most likely because it’s so relaxing for him onstage.
