ISIS MURDERS ANOTHER JOURNALIST
ISIS, an Islamic militant group that now controls lands in Syria and Iraq, has brutally murdered another journalist. Steven J. Sotloff, 31, was taken hostage by militants shortly after he crossed into northern Syria approximately one year ago. The freelance journalist who covered conflicts for numerous news organizations including Time and Foreign Policy was handed over to ISIS at some point after his capture and was not seen again until he appeared in a video alongside fellow journalist James Foley two weeks ago. That video went on to show conflict journalist Foley being beheaded by an ISIS militant. Sotloff was also beheaded.
ISIS claims that it is holding a third journalist, a British citizen, and is threatening to murder him as well if the U.S. does not end its airstrikes against the militants. The Obama administration has stated that the murders will not deter its attacks on the Islamic militants.
Sotloff was the 34th journalist killed so far in 2014 while reporting.
A REASON TO WALK ON 9/11
There’s a lot to remember on 9/11 this year. It is the one-year anniversary of the flood that devastated Boulder County and of course the date that will forever be associated with the World Trade Center tragedy that birthed two wars that are still being fought to this day.
But a non-political event sponsored by the Lemon Tree Group and the Interfaith Community of Boulder is out to remember something else: these tragedies also taught us that we live in a county that is inclusive, kind, and tolerant of diverse ways of thinking and believing, and that is worth celebrating.
In order to remember our difficulties while embracing all the good that has come from them as a community, everyone is being invited to participate in an evening of peace and recognition of our interdependence beginning at 4:30 p.m. on Sept. 11.
The following is the schedule of the evening’s events as posted on Lemon Tree Group’s Facebook page:
• 4:30 p.m.: Meet in the Boulder Islamic Center Parking Lot located at 5495 Baseline Road.
• 5:15 p.m.: Participants will walk together to Congregation Har Hashem at 3950 Baseline Road.
• 6:15 p.m.: After walking a short distance to St. Andrew Presbyterian Church, which is located at 3700 Baseline Road, vehicles will depart for the Boulder Court House.
• 6:45 p.m.: Meet in front of the Boulder Court House in the 1300 block on the Pearl Street Mall.
• 7:15 p.m.: Ceremony of Commemoration with Faith and Civic Leaders along with musicians and the community.
