FIRE IT UP
Boulder brewery BRU has opened its East Boulder restaurant, BRU Handbuilt Ales & Eats, at 5290 Arapahoe Ave., Unit 1, west of 55th Street, the former location of the Rock N Soul Café.
BRU is owned and operated by chef Ian Clark, who was formerly the executive chef at El Centro and a chef at Jax Fish House. Clark has said in the past he plans to make use of the location’s wood-fired oven for “most dishes,” including pizzas. He also plans to make goat milk ricotta cheese in-house.

FILM ON FEMALES AND FOAM
As part of its ongoing “Beer! Boulder’s History on Tap” exhibit, the Boulder History Museum will host a screening of the documentary The Love of Beer, which examines the rise of women in the craft brewing world. The film, set in the Pacific Northwest, chronicles the everyday lives of Portland brewers Tonya Cornett of Bend Brewing Company and Sarah Pederson of Saraveza, a brewpub.
The Boulder screening will include a talkback with Boulder’s only female professional brewer, Reva Golden of Twisted Pine. CHIPS FOR CHARITY
The game is Texas Hold ’Em. The rules are explained on cheat sheets for the uninitiated. And while the event is a fundraiser, when you consider the prizes, the stakes are high.
The June 14 Play Poker for Partners fundraiser, hosted by the Boulder Boucherie at 2595 Canyon Blvd., benefits Partners Mentoring Youth, a one-to-one mentoring program for disadvantaged youth.
For $35, participants receive fresh-grilled meat from the boucherie, wine samples and a stack of chips. They’ll vie for six prizes, distributed to the top six finishers in the poker tournament. Those prizes, chosen by the winners, include Frontier Airlines vouchers valued at $300 and $200, an overnight stay at the Blackhawk Casino, two rounds at the Flatirons Golf Course, and two drink prizes: a bottle of 2004 Geyser Peak Alexander Reserve Meritage Wine and a bottle of 16-year single-malt Lagavulin Scotch.
The tournament will be held from 7 to 11 p.m.
FOOD TRUCKS PILOT PROGRAM UNDERWAY
The City of Boulder has released the names, schedule and permitted locations for its pilot food truck program for the summer.
The food trucks listed in the schedule on the city’s website include favorites like Comida, Rollin Greens and Verde, as well as a long list of newcomers like Mama Jean’s, a caterer in Thornton; Denver Argentinean food truck Route 40; meal-and-frozen-yogurt specialists Go Purple Bus; a Smashburger truck; souvlaki truck The Giggling Greek; and more.
The program, which began June 1 and lasts through the end of summer, will feature mobile food vendors at certain Boulder parks. Seven days a week, trucks are permitted at Tom Watson, Foothills Community, East Boulder Community, North Boulder and Harlow Platts parks. Food trucks and carts are also permitted at lunch time, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., in the Municipal Campus parking lot at Broadway and Canyon.
Meanwhile, late-night food truck meetings (11 p.m to 3 a.m. Thursdays through Sundays) will take place at the Park Central Building parking lot at Broadway and Arapahoe.
These meetings, called “podding,” include three trucks per night and will last through the end of September.
At the end of the trial, city staff will take feedback from operators, the public and police and will consider trash removal, site cleanup and neighborhood quality of life to decide if food trucks should be permitted permanently. Learn more at www.bouldercolorado.gov.
BEER ON THE BLOCK
Denver’s Old South Pearl Street, home of Hanson’s bar, the Duffeyroll Café and The Village Cork wine bar, will host the sixth annual BrewGrass festival, a combination of beer and bluegrass, on Saturday, June 8.
Among this year’s bands, which start at noon, are Mountain Standard Time, Whitewater Ramble and Trout Steak Revival; among the brewers in attendance will be Left Hand Brewing.
