A view of Tasmania

A French sailor attempting a solo circumnavigation of the Earth was rescued by an Australian cruise ship after he had to abandon his yacht.

The sailor, Alain Delord, was planning to circle the globe near the 50th Parallel, just above Antarctica. His yacht encountered rough weather near Tasmania island, and he was forced to abandon ship to a life raft.

Delord floated in the life raft for three days before the Australian ship, a cruise ship with about 100 passengers, reached his raft. Delord was found conscious and “relatively well,” according to a local report.
