One of the darker hours of Rep. John Boehner’s term as Speaker of the House may be coming to an end.
The Ohio Republican, harshly criticized recently by New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie for his failure to act on a relief bill for Hurricane Sandy victims, led the Republican-dominated House in passing the first part of a relief bill.
The bill, which comes more than 60 days after the storm, includes $9.7 billion in relief spending. Sixty-seven Republicans still voted against the bill.
The bill authorizes the Federal Emergency Management Agency to make payouts to people who held federal flood insurance.
Boehner has said he will take up larger relief packages later this month.
