Tidbites | A delicious way to celebrate Veteran´s Day

Veteran’s Day provides the perfect backdrop for Boulder County nonprofit Veterans Helping Veterans Now to do its title justice.

This year will mark the group’s fifth annual “Hungry for Change” food drive to benefit its free programs. The programs provide important services to veterans, including support groups facilitated by licensed therapists, rides to VA medical appointments, and acupuncture and massage.

On Monday, Nov. 12, 18 local restaurants will donate 15 percent of the day’s profits to Veterans Helping Veterans Now.

Of the 18 restaurants, six are located in Boulder, while the rest are in Louisville, Longmont and Lafayette.

GIVE THE GIFT OF FOOD, RECEIVE THE GIFT OF BEER

Avery Tap Room is asking for non-perishable items from Community Food Share’s most-needed list. At the top of this list are 100 percent fruit juice, cereal, peanut butter, canned fish and meat, canned chili and stew and pasta sauce.

The food drive began on Nov. 1 and goes through Nov. 15. On the last day of the drive, Avery Tap Room will hold a release party at 5 p.m.

Donations will be accepted at the release party, and prizes will be awarded. People who donate three or more items will receive a voucher for a 10-ounce Czar, and one raffle ticket will be given for every three items donated. Avery will raffle off a five-gallon keg or two cases of The Czar. Winners must be present during the 7 p.m. drawing.

WINE AND BRINE IN PREPARATION FOR THANKSGIVING

Boulder cheese shop Cured has taken steps to make Thanksgiving a little bit easier. Recognizing the difficulty of pairing wine with a big Thanksgiving meal, Cured has chosen four different bottles of wine to match the many flavors of the holiday.

On Nov. 15, Cured invites residents to come sample the selected wines for free along with bites of roasted turkey and porchetta, a rolled pork roast seasoned with garlic, herbs and spices.

Cured will also have sweet sausage, fall apples, squash, potatoes and more from other local restaurants and farms for sale for Thanksgiving dinner.
