ARTIST SERIES For more than 70 years, the Artist Series has been bringing the world’s finest music and dance performances to Boulder. There are more than 16,000 Artist Series patrons who come every year to experience both world-renowned and emerging artists. The series features world-class soloists, ensembles and dance companies in Macky Auditorium. This season’s concerts include a broad spectrum of performing arts, including classical music, jazz, world music, theater and dance. Performances take place in the historic Macky Auditorium at 7:30 p.m. unless otherwise noted.
Edgar Meyer and Chris Thile “Meyer can handle anything from complex bowing to jazzy finger-plucking, and Thile picks more notes out of his instrument than perhaps anyone who has ever played the bluegrass-associated mandolin.” Roanoke Times Thurs., Sept. 25, 2008 Tickets: $12 to $52 World-renowned double bassist Edgar Meyer and Nickel Creek’s mandolin virtuoso Chris Thile join forces to open the Artist Series season with a diverse program of original music.
Philadanco “The members of the Philadelphia Dance Company, better known as Philadanco, can do just about anything: leap like arrows in flight, spin, stretch, kick and melt like hot wax.” Washington Post Thurs., Oct. 2, 2008 Tickets: $12 to $52 Rooted in African-American cultural traditions, Philadanco is Philadelphia’s premiere modern dance company. Founded by Joan Myers Brown in 1970, Philadanco has had a significant impact on the dance world. Its artistic direction and renowned national and international guest choreographers have developed a dance company with passion, power, skill and diversity.
Kavafian-Schub-Shifrin “No praise can be too high... for the three hypervirtuosos... especially violinist Ani Kavafian, in a part of almost unbelievable difficulty.” Boston Globe Sat., Oct. 11, 2008 Tickets: $12 to $52 After 25 years of friendship and music-making, violinist Ani Kavafian, pianist Andre-Michel Schub and clarinetist David Shifrin — each a true virtuoso and a member of the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center — come together as a trio with undeniable chemistry. Combined, they have performed with nearly every major orchestra and in recital at the world’s major concert halls.
Soweto Gospel Choir “A cornucopia of remarkable voices: sharp, sweet, kindly, raspy and incantatory leads above a magnificently velvety blend.” New York Times Thurs., Oct. 30, 2008 Tickets: $12 to $52 Back from South Africa by popular demand, the awe-inspiring Soweto Gospel Choir performs in eight different languages in a compelling program of tribal, traditional and popular African and Western gospel music. Earthy rhythms, rich harmonies, a capella and charismatic performances combine to uplift the soul and express South Africa’s great hopes for the future.
Christopher O’Riley “Played so delicately that he seemingly left no fingerprints on the keys, yet his melodies sung out with sweet clarity.” Washington Post Fri., Nov. 14, 2008 Tickets: $12 to $52 From his groundbreaking transcriptions of Radiohead to his sublime interpretations of classical and contemporary repertoire, pianist Christopher O’Riley has redefined the possibilities of classical music. As host of the most popular classical music radio show on the air, NPR’s From the Top, O’Riley works and performs with the next generation of young artists with humor and a lack of pretense.
Colorado Symphony Orchestra Jeffrey Kahane, music director Alisa Weilerstein, cello “If Ms. Weilerstein is precocious, it is in communicating, as many older musicians do not, a distinctive artistic personality. She lets you know exactly who she is, and it’s hard to imagine not wanting to develop the acquaintance in the years ahead.” New York Times Thurs., Jan. 15, 2009 Tickets: $12 to $52 The Artist Series is proud to welcome the Colorado Symphony for a special performance in Boulder’s Macky Auditorium featuring soloist Alisa Weilerstein. A natural virtuoso hailed for her impassioned musicianship and expressive range, internationally renowned cellist Alisa Weilerstein is one of the premiere soloists and chamber musicians of her generation.
The Great Tennessee Monkey Trial With L.A. Theatre Works “L.A. Theatre Works is a national theatrical treasure…” Philadelphia Inquirer Mon., Feb. 2, 2009 Tickets: $12 to $52 In 1925, a trial about one of the great debates of American society played out in a rural Tennessee courthouse. Eight decades later, the issues and oratory of the Scopes trial — pitting evolution against creationism — have a hauntingly familiar ring. L.A. Theatre Works performs a radio-play-format production of The Great Tennessee Monkey Trial — based on actual trial transcripts — with a cast starring renowned stage and screen actors.
Academy of St. Martin in the Fields With Julia Fischer “Hats off to the Academy of St. Martin in the Fields, an orchestra in a thousand...” Glasgow Herald Thurs., Feb. 19, 2009 Tickets: $12 to $52 Celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2008, the Academy of St. Martin in the Fields is world renowned for its 500 recordings and impressive international tours. The evening’s program both celebrates the Academy’s inception as a primarily baroque ensemble with two Bach solo violin concerti, and its long-standing commitment to English music with works by Britten and Walton. Quickly rising international star violinist Julia Fischer joins the Academy as soloist and leader.
Vanguard Jazz Orchestra “The band’s orchestral colors, rhythms, and formal strategies could take on modernist garb, but the band has always had a shout-it-out-loud enthusiasm, producing huge tones that are both thrilling and precise.” The New Yorker Wed., March 18, 2009 Tickets: $12 to $52 For more than four decades New York’s Vanguard Jazz Orchestra has been committed to engaging audiences and serving as a creative outlet for some of the nation’s foremost performers, composers and arrangers. Based at the world famous Village Vanguard, the driving force behind the longevity and artistic excellence of this ensemble is a commitment to the original Thad Jones/Mel Lewis Orchestra precepts of sound.
Mariza “When Mariza sings, time stands still. Every word is sung with intense concentration, every note hit flawlessly. When she pauses for dramatic effect, we are all with her, caught in her trap…” BBC Radio Wed, April 22, 2009 In just a few short years, Mariza has established herself as the new face of Portuguese Fado, seducing audiences (including that of the Late Show with David Letterman) worldwide with her breathtaking voice, charismatic stage presence and powerful blend of traditional and contemporary song forms.
