Environmental spice
A Spice of Life Event Center & Catering Services, 5706 Arapahoe Ave., Boulder,
303-444-3452

During these past few years, Boulder’s Eco-Cycle organization has garnered many local and national accolades for its environmental efforts. With the new year, they have decided to issue out some awards of their own. Eco-Cycle has proclaimed that local event and catering company A Spice of Life is the 2008 winner of the Zero Waste Award. The Zero Waste program encourages businesses to work toward a sustainable existence, and to set community standards for recycling, reusing and composting. A Spice of Life has been participating in the program for four years, and definitely did their share during 2008. The company was able to save 264 trees, 108,738 gallons of water, and a slew of natural resources. In addition to their composting and recycling efforts, A Spice of Life offers compostable cups and plates, and utensils made from recycled material. For more information, or to book your next event with the eco-friendly organization, call 303-444-3452 or visit www.aspiceoflife.com.

Empirical beer
The Empire Lounge & Restaurant, 816 Main St., Louisville, 303-665-2521

There’s a lot of talk out there about wine pairings. But oftentimes we overlook one of the best alcohols to accompany our meals — beer. And in the land of abundant microbrews, that is not an acceptable oversight. However, there are a lot of beer styles out there, and it can be tricky figuring out the proper match at first. To help navigate you through the process, Oskar Blues is teaming up with The Empire Lounge & Restaurant for a Beer Dinner. Oskar Blues is Lyons’ microbrew master, with famous suds like Dale’s Pale Ale and Old Chub. The Empire is a recently opened restaurant in downtown Louisville with a timely vibe. Its newly renovated historic building is the perfect place to enjoy “serious campfire cuisine” — in other words, regional-minded American grub that uses local ingredients and simple-but-elegant flavors. The Beer Dinner will take place on Jan. 31 at 6 p.m. and will include four courses of Empire food, five courses of Oskar’s beers and live entertainment. Tickets are $50 per person and seating is limited. For more information or to purchase tickets, call Empire at 303-665-2521.
