Food Bites
Food happenings around town

St. Patrick’s Day is upon us yet again, a time for amateurs to drink excessive amounts of green beer, the real imbibers to drink Guinness and the Irish and Irish-at-heart to get green and celebrate all things Celtic — while drinking. Though the American version of this once reverent holiday might be just an excuse to party for some, for others it’s a showcase of Irish culture and heritage. Some 36 million Americans claim Irish ancestry, so it’s no small wonder that this country takes St. Paddy’s Day seriously. If you’re looking for a little bit of Éire in Boulder, here are a couple recommendations for St. Patrick’s Day in the Republic. After all, everyone’s Irish on March 17.

Conor O’Neills
1922 13th St., 303-449-1922
There is no better place in town to celebrate St. Paddy’s than Conor O’Neills. The traditional Irish pub has a whole weekend of Celtic celebrations lined up. Starting on Saturday, March 15 (Ireland’s St. Patrick’s Day), Conor O’Neills will have an Irish Band from 1-4 p.m., Irish dancers from 5-7 p.m. and the Unknown Americans at 10 p.m. You can also enjoy $3.50 “keep the glass” pints of Kronenbourg. On Sunday, March 16, the pub will launch their St. Patrick’s Day parade at noon. Irish dancers will do their jigs after the parade, and the evening will include $3 drop shots. And then on the day, March 17, be prepared for Irish dancing and bagpipes all day long! You’d have to be a leprechaun to discover a better pot of gold.

The Scotch Corner Pub
1800 Broadway, 303-545-2000
OK. So it’s not exactly an Irish pub, but at least Scotland is in the U.K. If we can celebrate St. Paddy’s across the Atlantic, the Emerald Isle’s neighbors can dish it out, too. Boulder’s new Scotch Corner Pub will have various beer specials throughout the day on March 17. Plans for a special holiday menu are in the works, and live music will accompany you for any spontaneous jigs.

The Hungry Toad
2543 N. Broadway, 303-442-5012
The Hungry Toad is one of Boulder’s best neighborhood pubs, the ideal locale for holiday celebrations. This quaint bar will have St. Patrick’s specials like Irish Stew and Corned Beef and Cabbage to fill your stomach before any serious alcohol consumption. Beer specials will also be available.

Trattoria on Pearl
1430 Pearl St., 303-530-2214
Trattoria isn’t the most rowdy spot in town, but they certainly know hot to win over the Celtic-minded consumer. In celebration of St. Patrick’s Day, Trattoria will offer free Irish coffee and mint chocolate cookies with any purchase all weekend from March 14 to March 17.
